History

In the early 90s, a plot of land measuring 1.20 acres was purchased by the Poona Diocesan Corporation at Shivneri (Kondhwa). It was compounded and lying unused thereafter.

In 1992, with permission from Bishop Valerian and with the help of Fr. V. S. Lourdu and other priests, Sunday mass was celebrated at the residence of Mr. Trinity Mendonca and as the numbers grew, in the home of Mr. Bona Viegas whose house was able to accommodate a larger number of faithful. The centre was self-sufficient due to generous donations from local parishioners.

In 1996 Bishop Valerian D’souza established what is today called the Good Shepherd Parish. It was during Fr. Arokiaswamy’s tenure that a suggestion to hold Sunday mass on the unused Shivneri plot was made and enthusiastically followed up by the local parishioners.

In 2007 the Good Shepherd Church on NIBM Rd, Undri was built and consecrated in April 2011 by Bishop Thomas Dabre.

In July 2013, Bishop Thomas Dabre promised the people that there would be a separate church for the people of Kondhwa. Fr. Julian Misquitta was appointed Priest in charge and also to supervise the construction of the Church. The community decided to dedicate the church to Our Lady of Lourdes. In the interim, generous parishioners offered their premises to hold regular Sunday mass.

It was the joint collaboration of PDC, parishioners and well wishers that the construction of the Church was completed. The parishioners also contributed generously and helped beautify the interiors of the Church.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church was consecrated and inaugurated on 31 January 2018 by Rt. Rev. Bishop Thomas Dabre.

“Today on that barren piece of land of yesteryears, stands the beautiful Church and Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes”
